3 Acting Audition Rules To Live By

In show business, there are some hard and fast rules that can make or break acting auditions. In many ways, movie auditions, TV show auditions, and Broadway auditions are like an important job interview. Your presentation is key, even if you don’t have tons of experience or an acting agency to represent you. That being said, here are three acting audition rules to live by!

Get A Copy Of The Script

Taking initiative and getting a copy of the script ahead of time is a great way to set yourself apart from others who are auditioning for the same part. All too often, people show up to acting auditions unprepared, and they spend the entire time looking down, reading the script word for word. Obviously, this leaves little room for expressions, body language, and changes in tone/mood, which are all critical pieces of a successful casting audition.

So, if you’re trying to nail an acting audition, ask if you can get a copy of the script in advance so you can practice the lines and get a feel for the character’s persona. Trust us — your presentation will be a hundred times better, and the casting director will remember that you took the initiative to put your best foot forward. Nothing is more important than preparing for an acting audition, and you can’t do that without the script.

Come Prepared

When we say preparation is essential for nailing an acting audition, we don’t just mean rehearsing the lines. In show business, going to an audition prepared means arriving on time and bringing a copy of your portfolio with professional headshots, a resume, and recommendations if you have them. Anything you can think of to make yourself appear more professional and experienced will make a difference, so be sure to get your ducks in a row well before your audition date. Then, you won’t be scrambling to get everything together in the hours leading up to your audition, and you won’t be missing anything when you arrive at the casting call.

Look The Part

Another major rule of acting auditions is to look the part, while still looking professional. In job interviews, experts suggest “dressing up” two levels above the company’s dress code. This gets a little more tricky with casting auditions, as you want professional without being overdressed for the part. If your young child is attending a Disney audition, for example, be sure to have them dress the part of the character (likely casual attire), but choose their clothes wisely. Leave out clothes that are stained or raggedy, and choose cute pieces that match. The same goes for commercial auditions and movie auditions — casual attire is okay if you look the part and have a clean presentation.

Nail Your Acting Auditions With An Acting Agency

Now that you know a few of the main rules that can make or break acting auditions, it’s time to look for auditions nearby. It’s much harder to find casting auditions if you don’t have an acting agency to help you find promising opportunities, which is why we recommend finding a talent agent to provide training and networking opportunities. Adams Davy is an established teens’ and kids’ talent agency in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and New York, and we help young talent find the best acting auditions for kids in their area.
